How to clean air fryer baskets: 5 rules that save the coating

By The Non-Toxic Kitchen Team · Last updated October 9, 2026

Warm soapy water, a soft sponge and a 15-60 minute soak after every use; no metal or steel wool. Makers say dishwasher safe, but Cosori still suggests hand washing. Replace a basket that flakes.

Clean an air fryer basket with warm water, dish soap and a soft sponge after every use, and soak it for 15 to 60 minutes when food is stuck on. Never use steel wool, scouring pads or metal tools on a coated basket. Many makers say the basket is dishwasher safe, but Cosori's own cleaning guide adds that hand washing is the way to preserve the nonstick, so treat the dishwasher as a backup, not the routine. Here are the five rules, the burnt-grease fixes, the heating element, and when a basket is past saving.

Rule 1: cool it, then clean it the same day

Unplug the unit and let it cool. Cosori's product page says to allow "the appliance to cool completely before cleaning" (Cosori), and Consumer Reports' first step is simply not to delay: empty the drawer once it is cool rather than leaving grease to harden overnight (Consumer Reports). Cold grease wipes off; baked-on grease from three dinners does not.

Rule 2: soak, don't scrub

Fill the sink or the basket itself with warm water and a squirt of dish soap. Cosori recommends submerging the basket and crisper plate "for 15 minutes" (Cosori blog); Consumer Reports cites a maker recommendation of "30 to 60 minutes" for heavier buildup. After the soak, most residue lifts with a soft sponge. For bits wedged in the crisper plate holes, Consumer Reports suggests a wooden skewer or toothpick, not a knife tip.

Rule 3: nothing metal touches the coating

This is the rule that decides how long the basket lasts. Consumer Reports: "Do not use metal utensils, steel wool, or any other abrasives, because they can scratch or chip the nonstick coating." Cosori says the same about "steel wool, harsh brushes, or sharp tools" and recommends wooden or silicone utensils for serving. The mistake that ruins a basket is usually a fork used to flip chicken, not the dishwasher. Our list of air fryer mistakes covers the rest.

Rule 4: the dishwasher, in the maker's own words

Makers hedge here, so read what each one says.

  • The Cosori TurboBlaze product page says: "Toss the PFAS-free ceramic-coated, nonstick basket and crisper plate into the dishwasher for hassle-free cleanup." Cosori's cleaning blog, published by the same company, says: "Hand washing is typically recommended to preserve the non-stick coating." Both are the maker talking. Our reading: the dishwasher will not void anything, but hand washing is what the maker suggests if you want the coating to last.
  • The Ninja Air Fryer Pro AF142 is titled "Dishwasher-safe" on Amazon and the bullets say the "basket and removable crisper plate are both nonstick" (Amazon listing). Ninja does not name the coating type, so we cannot tell you whether it is PTFE or ceramic; see our basket materials guide.
  • The Ninja Flip SP151 spec sheet on SharkNinja's site reads "Dishwasher Safe: No" (SharkNinja). That line describes the oven; the page does not say whether the air fry basket, sheet pan or wire rack can go in. Hand wash them until Ninja says otherwise.
  • The Ninja Crispi Pro Glass glassware, crisper plates and lids are dishwasher safe per the maker, with one condition: "Allow glass to cool gradually to room temperature before placing it in water, sink, or dishwasher" (SharkNinja Singapore). Hot borosilicate into cold water is how glass cracks.

Consumer Reports counted "51 out of 64" air fryers it looked at claiming dishwasher-safe components, so a dishwasher claim is normal. It just is not the same as a promise about coating life.

Rule 5: dry it, then put it back

Dry every part before reassembling. Water left standing in the drawer well is what you smell the next day, and it has nowhere to go but the base of the unit.

Burnt grease, sticky film and smells

Three fixes, all from the maker and Consumer Reports pages above:

  1. Baking soda paste for stubborn brown stains. Cosori lists baking soda for "stubborn stains and odors." Spread it on, wait, wipe with a soft sponge.
  2. Vinegar and water for lingering smells. Cosori: "wipe down the interior with a mixture of water and vinegar" after the grease is gone.
  3. Half a lemon rubbed over the basket and drawer, left 30 minutes, then rewashed, per Consumer Reports.

If a sticky, varnish-like film keeps coming back on the basket, look at how you are oiling food. Our oil sprayer vs cooking spray guide explains the difference. If you are tempted by liners to skip cleaning altogether, read are air fryer liners safe first; they come with a fire warning of their own.

Cleaning the heating element

The coil above the basket collects grease spatter and the occasional burnt crumb, and that is where the smoke comes from on the next preheat. Unplug the unit and let it cool fully. Consumer Reports: "Check the heating element for grease and food debris and wipe clean," using a cloth dampened in warm soapy water. Cosori adds a dry step: "Use a soft-bristle brush to gently sweep away dust and debris. Avoid applying water directly to the heating element (to prevent short-circuiting)." So: brush dry, then a wrung-out damp cloth, never a rinse. Cosori also warns not to submerge the unit and not to let parchment or foil touch the element.

The Ninja Flip and other toaster-oven styles

Basket-style fryers have one drawer to wash. Toaster-oven styles like the Ninja Flip have a crumb tray, a sheet pan, a wire rack, a basket and interior walls with six infrared elements, and the maker's spec says the unit is not dishwasher safe. On Amazon the Flip holds 4.3 stars across 2,112 ratings as of October 2026, the lowest of the six fryers we review, and buyer feedback on cleaning is mixed. Pull the crumb tray after every toast cycle, wipe the walls while they are warm (not hot), and expect more hand washing than with a drawer model. Our first-time air fryer guide explains why we steer most first buyers to a drawer.

When to replace the basket

The National Capital Poison Center's advice for nonstick cookware is to "inspect your cookware regularly for chips and scratches and replace any damaged cookware" (Poison Control). Translate that for a basket:

  • Hairline scuffs: keep using it, retire the metal tongs.
  • Peeling or flaking you can see on food: replace the basket.
  • Bare aluminum patches on a ceramic basket: not a chemical worry, but the nonstick is gone there; replace when it bothers you.
  • Warped drawer that no longer seats: replace, since it affects airflow.

Where to buy one: start with the maker. Cosori's accessories page lists trays, racks and liners but no replacement baskets for the TurboBlaze as of October 2026 (Cosori accessories), and the TurboBlaze carries a 2-year limited warranty, so a basket that peels early is a warranty call first. If the maker has nothing, search Amazon for "air fryer basket replacement" plus your exact model number (for example AF142 or CAF-DC601). Expect third-party parts in the results, so match the model number and the basket dimensions before ordering, and remember that a third-party basket carries its own coating claim, not the original maker's. For the general rules on worn nonstick, see when to replace a nonstick pan.

If you have a health condition and are unsure about a worn coating, ask your doctor; a listing cannot answer that for you.

Bottom line

Soap, warm water, a soft sponge and a soak handle almost everything. Metal tools and scouring pads are what end a basket early, not the dishwasher, though Cosori itself suggests hand washing to keep the coating longest. Brush the heating element dry and wipe it damp. Replace the basket when it flakes, and check the maker before buying a third-party part.
